Gowns with sneakers seems to be the winning formula on the red carpet thanks to the likes of Sonam K Ahuja. Over the last seven years, trainers have completely eclipsed the semi-formal space. From sporty luxe dunks to performance trainers in chic materials (leather kicks!) the trainers have emerged as one of the most powerful footwear essentials till date. Be it Nike’s Air Force or Reebok x Opening Ceremony collab or the ubiquitous New Balance or Tory Burch Ruffle Sneaker — one’s spoilt for choice.  Designer Rajat Tangri equates trainers with comfort. “Trainers are more comfy than any other shoes. Personally, I’d love to wear sneakers with an Indian outfit, maybe a kurta with churidaars teamed with a pair of metallic sneakers.”

A SPORTIFIED APPEAL

Designer Nishka Lulla hails them as impossibly practical and also statement-making. “I wear trainers with suits. The Gucci white sneakers go well with formal outfits,” says she.

MARRYING RETRO

A section of style arbiters attribute their popularity to revival of the 90s. Stylist Akshay Tyagi says, “We are going back to the 80s and 90s sensibility which celebrated anti-fashion. The athleisure happened in 2000 and today designers are marrying this new vision with retro laced with glamour and comfort. I definitely see it lasting. Besides, one could easily make the day-to-night transition with these essentials.”
