With the various Spring/Summer showings in — New York,    London, Milan and Paris — having recently concluded, there’s no better time to take a glance at what the coming year will bring in terms of beauty. There were a number of looks that caught one’s fancy, from barely-there baby bangs, to variations of the classic braid and make-up artists getting creative with liner. Here’s what to look forward to...

Cropped fringes

Short and choppy bangs seemed to be the popular choice of the coming season with models for Prada, Gucci and Miu Miu playing with this style. At Dries Van Noten, one saw peroxide blonde choppy baby bangs, while Mugler displayed curly micro fringes. Clint Fernandes, hair and make-up expert says this doesn’t suit all women. “It depends a lot on your personality, and you also need a certain kind of dress sense to pull it off. Otherwise, it can look a little strange. Stick to slightly thinner bangs this season,” he advises.

Dripping wet locks

The wet, sultry look made an appearance on the ramp. At Balenciaga, there were slick manes with hair worn back. Wet finger waves were spotted at Chromat while Marni played with a damp crown area. Clint says this is an extension of the natural, out-of-bed look. “This works more on the ramp than off it. In the Indian context, it can look a little messy. Our high humidity can make the hair go frizzy once it is dried out. If trying out the look, clip your hair back and set it well,” he adds.

Liner magic

Kohl is a must-have tool in your beauty arsenal for summer. Rochas gave a twist to the classic cat eye, creating a floating eyeliner look. Christian Dior had models with graphic designs painted on along the eyes, while Marni had lines extending to the outer edges of the brows. Clint says this season a number of designers kept the make-up fresh and simple and just played around with the eye. “This liner style is younger in treatment. Many have experimented with the winged liner, giving it a pop culture style,” he says.

Braids galore

The humble braid isn’t going anywhere. There were long and sleek ones spotted on the ramps. At Erdem, low plaits extended till the model’s waist and Max Mara’s outing, saw Kaia Gerber sporting a solid yet shiny one. Meanwhile, Alexander McQueen toyed with twin power braids. Paco Rabanne displayed braided updos ideal for those sultry summer days.  Make-up and hair expert, Jyoti Advani says, “Braids are easy breezy and definitely very chic. It’s one of the best summer hair hacks that can be worn with casuals, party wear and even look more contemporary if styled correctly.”

Shine on glitter

There was a touch of glitter on the lids for a number of shows including Simone Rocha and Missoni. At Valentino, vibrant glitter eye make-up was used to create winged eye looks that instantly grabbed eyeballs. Clint says the shine represents the dewy nature of skin which is synonymous with summer. “For this look, gloss can be used on the lids. If used minimally, it can look interesting. The same can also be achieved with highlighter. Opt for a glitter eye cream so that there’s no fear of the glitter moving,” he adds.

Pink for spring

While the red lip continued to show up on the runways at Burberry and Escada, pink was also a popular choice. A blurred pink was seen at Koché, while  Chanel and Valentino went for a vibrant pink hue. Jyoti says pink lips and kohl eyes are her go to look. “It makes you look more youthful. In the warmer months, pastel shades work best. Choose one according to your skin tone. Opt for baby pink for lighter skin tones, fuchsia for medium and deeper hues of pink for darker women,” she advises.
