Hema Sardesai, who shot to fame with her song Aawara  Bhanwrein with AR Rahman is busy with social activities nowadays more than her singing. The singer has been promoting ‘Save the Girl Child’ vehemently across the globe and has been participating in international conferences. “I think being a woman, I should take a stand against the merciless killing of girl child. It’s so ironic that it still takes place in our country and somewhere down the line we are also responsible. We are the fortunate ones who have been brought up by their parents and there are those ill-fated ones killed by destiny. I believe as a woman, it’s my duty to make people aware of this social evil,” Hema says.

Her album Hindustani Gudiya also featured a song about a girl child almost a decade back. “I have been concerned about this from day one. Recently, I went to Indonesia for the same and I got an enthusiastic response. Everyone supporting social causes doesn’t fetch any money. But I don’t think you need tons of money to live a life,” she adds.

With so much on her platter,  somewhere down the line, has film music  taken a backseat? “The last song I sang which got a good response was Baadal pe pao hain in Chak De India. I have been busy with a lot of other stuff in my life. My values have kept me very tall and I am very happy with whatever I have got,” she says.

Hema also has something interesting to say about the films she sings in. “Whenever I sing, I never ask the name of the film. I just sing in close association with my music director. So, I hardly know the names of the films. Only when the album arrives at my doorstep before the music release, I get to know about it,” she ends.
