What is it about the '70s which makes it a recurring presence in our closets? Perhaps that free spirit tinged with playfulness and a sense of liberation. Think flared denims, a languid pantsuit and a bell-sleeved, sequinned jumpsuit. It was an era when the style lexicon was rewritten and hence an epoch-defining imagery unfurled. Be it Bianca Jagger's wedding skirt suit (by Yves Saint Laurent) or Farrah Fawcett's denim flares on a skateboard. And of course, the game-changing David Bowie's iconic looks come to mind.

Pre-Fall 18 is awash with '70s characteristic insignias - from the cropped flared pants and statement collared jackets seen at Chloe to the disco fever fuelled by Halpern's glittering rompers to JW Anderson's paisley printed top. We get designers to dwell on the decade's all-pervading aesthetic.

CELEBRATION OF EXOTICA

The '70s was all about celebrating the exotic and voicing one's personal individuality. Designer Aniket Satam observes that given the current global socio-political scenario, fashion seems to be in an expressive zone. "After the grunge minimal wave of the '90s-inspired fashion and the excessive maximalism of the '80s, '70s aesthetic somewhere is a nice breather and also a palate cleanser. It's time to chant You only look once (YOLO)  mantra. Hence refined clean silhouettes and bohemian undertones have seen a resurgence in the recent Pre-Fall collections. The jumpsuit has made a major comeback and in this inning, it is more glamorous and fluid in nature. Another silhouette which echoes the current feminist mojo is the classic pantsuit in a bolder palette and daring neckline."

Glam and fluidity may have become the Pre-Fall mainstay but how does one make these offerings of the moment.

Designer Gabriella Demetriades of label Deme suggests, "Play with a muted print and some faux fur or maybe just add retro sunglasses to your existing look. We do not have to take this trend literally we can play around with elements of it which best suit us."

SAY HELLO TO BELL SLEEVES

This boho  chic vibe is making its way into indian fashion as well. Designer Ohaila Khan says, "We have done a Bridal collection for the coming year with bell sleeves reminiscent of the 70’s and ruffle tiers seen in lehengas, all inspired from the era gone by.
