The mother of all fast foods — idlies — is something Bangalore is extremely proud of. DNA brings to you some of the places you must check out...

Brahmin’s Coffee Bar
No one in Bangalore, absolutely no one, can miss out on eating idlies at Brahmin’s Coffee Bar at Sankarapuram. Radhakrishna Adiga, who runs the place, will ensure you’re talking about their idlies for a long time.

A simple menu, perfect for an early morning breakfast, Brahmin’ Coffee Bar doesn’t offer you more than five dishes — idlies, vadas, kharabath, kesaribath and coffee.

The place gets filled up pretty quick and the food gets over early — so be there by 6am! Good things don’t come easy my friend...
Shree Sagar, Malleswaram

Central Tiffin Road recently changed its name to Shree Sagar. However, that hasn’t made much difference to their food. The benne dosa, which is one of the most popular dishes served there, also finds competition from the idlies. Pure ingredients, including the butter, have ensured that people go back to eat there time and again.

MTR, Lalbagh
The Mavalli Tiffin Rooms also known as MTR) started with one small joint to become a global brand. However, international recognition hasn’t affected its down-to-earth quality at all. From meals to quick snacks like the dosa, and of course, the idlies and kharabath, you have to make sure you’re well ahead of time to grab a good meal at MTR; or else just come back the next day!

Vidyarthi Bhavan, Gandhi Bazaar
A traditional place to grab a bite in Basavanagudi, Vidyarthi Bhavan might not be the best place in the city to eat a dosa or even the idli but it’s still considered to be one of the most traditional hallmarks of the city. Dhoti-clad servers doing the balancing act while they go from table to table is an interesting sight. They don’t serve sambar — hard to understand — but their idlies and chutneys are totally worth a bite.

Veena Stores, Malleswaram
They used to serve condiments and now they dish out some of the city’s softest idlies, along with large vadas, uppit and kesari bath. It’s inexpensive, comes with a lot of chutney and is the pride of Malleswaram, if not the entire city. It’s totally worth driving up to the place just for one idli-morning.
