The annual mega literary extravaganza in Jaipur is set to celebrate its sixth edition in January 2011 in the company of Nobel laureates JM Coetzee and Orhan Pamuk as well as seven Booker Prize winners.
Beginning on January 21, the five-day annual DSC Jaipur Literature Festival to be held at the Diggi Palace there is expected to once again bring together a host of leading national and international writers over a wide range of activities including debates, discussions, readings, music sessions and workshops.
Organisers say the number of authors participating in the event is expected to exceed 210.
"The Jaipur Literature Festival has gained enormous recognition worldwide. Besides a host of authors, this year's show will also have delegates flying in from across the globe. The venue at Diggi Palace is three times bigger compared to last year. Instead of the Durbar Hall, the front lawns will be the venue," says Sanjoy K Roy, producer, DSC Jaipur Literature Festival.
Festival co-director Namita Gokhale says, "Jaipur in January 2011 promises more joy and literary stimulation than ever before. The festival continues to showcase the strength and diversity of writing in Indian languages.
It includes sessions in Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Tamil, Bangla, Assamiya, Odiya, Gujarati, Malayalam, Kashmiri, Punjabi, Nepali, Bhojpuri and Rajasthani. Debate and dialogue, poetry readings and music, what more could be an intelligent way to celebrate a new year?"
In its sixth year key components of the festival would be special focus on writing from the North-East and the United States. There would also be sessions on varied topics -international affairs, foreign policy, caste and racial issues, naxalism, cinema, religion, gender and environment among others.
The inaugural DSC Prize for South Asia Literature is expected to be announced at the venue. The shortlisted authors include Amit Chaudhuri, Musharraf Ali Farooqui, Tania James, Manju Kapur, Neel Mukherjee and HM Naqvi.
Personalities set to attend the event are Anurag Kashyap, Atiq Rahimi, Candace Bushnell, Chimamanda Adichie, Irvine Welsh, Javed Akhtar, Jay McInerney, Jon Lee Anderson, Jung Chang, Junot Diaz, Kamilla Shamsie, Kiran Desai, Mamang Dai, Martin Amis, Mohsin Hamid, Mrinal Pande, Patrick French, Richard Ford, Rory Stewart, Shehan, Sheldon Pollock and Vikram Seth.
Festival co-director William Dalrymple says, "When I see the amazing list of names we have assembled this year, I almost have to restrain myself from hugging myself with pleasure and amazement. The world's very greatest writers are assembling in Jaipur at the end of January, and my only anxiety is how we're ever going to match this!"
The festival, a free event for the public will culminate on January 25, 2011.
