Nimish Tanna’s first published work was an article in his engineering college’s magazine. Thereafter, the IT guy with a post-graduate degree in international business management started writing short stories from his management school days, which he collated in his debut book, Moments Of Truth. “Everyone has a story in them raring to be told. The question is when and how will it come out,” says the New Zealand resident who is releasing his second novel, Divyastra, which is self-published through the Wordit Art Fund Project. The text is a fantasy tale of a father-son relationship, ancient myths, icelestial weapons and an ambitious man, Shankar, unable to deal with life’s harsh realities.

The idea of Divyastra

Soon after releasing my first novel, I had multiple story ideas but was a bit conscious about the subject I’d write about. I decided to decode both facets of a father-son relationship, especially the other side and started to imagine a character who blames his father’s unambitious genes for his own failures. This is where the central conflict germinated but I needed to build an interesting world. But, I gave up.

A year later, I was living in a remote suburb of Melbourne where I had no TV or social engagements but just internet connection, so, I’d watch Ramayana and Mahabharata episodes. YouTube’s algorithm suggested documentaries on celestial weapons, including one on Dr John Hagelin, a renowned physicist and leader on transcendental meditation. My mind started to weave a world of celestial weapons, ancient wisdom and mythological characters, and the story was born.

Struggle to get published

I’d be lying if I said that I did not struggle. I remember personally delivering manuscripts to publishers hoping to get a break. Leadstart Publications came back to me with a proposal to publish. I jumped at that chance. Marketing and distributing effectively was the bigger monster to be tamed.

Up next

I’m currently working on adapting Divyastra into a full-length feature script and alongside also developing two more stories as speculative scripts.
