On this National Girl Child Day, it is important for us to reflect on the transformative power of empowering girls and how it can shape a brighter future for societies across the globe.
As India continues to accelerate on its economic growth journey and social progress, it is presented with a unique opportunity—unlocking the untapped potential of its youth. Among them, girl children hold the promise of shaping a brighter and more inclusive future for the country. However, realizing this vision requires concerted efforts to dismantledeeply entrenched gender biases and build an environment where girls can ‘aspire, achieve, and thrive’ fearlessly.
On this National Girl Child Day, it is important for us to reflect on the transformative power of empowering girls and how it can shape a brighter future for societies across the globe. Nayana Chowdhury, CEO of Breakthrough Trust believes, “When girls are given the resources, support, and opportunities to develop their potential, they can drive meaningful change within their communities and the world at large. Empowering girls through education, healthcare, and social inclusion not only helps them achieve their dreams but also strengthens the fabric of society, promoting equality and social progress.”
Powering the Aspirations of Girls
India’s demographic dividend—its predominantly young population—can only be unlocked by unleashing the aspirations of its youth. Yet, for many girls, societal norms and gender-based violence continue to hold them back. The journey of these young minds is often fraught with challenges, from restrictive gender norms to limited access to education and career opportunities.
As Nayana puts it, “The best thing parents can offer their daughters is trust and unwavering support to give wings to their dreams. When girls are given the freedom to dream and the resources to achieve, they don’t just uplift themselves—they transform their families, communities, and the nation.”
Breakthrough’s work in states such as Haryana, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh hashighlighted the power of focused engagement with families and communities. Through initiatives that address gender norms, engage families, and create awareness about career possibilities, the organization has witnessed a remarkable shift in the aspirations of adolescent girls. In regions where professional careers for girls were once unimaginable, today’s youth are aiming for careers in medicine, law enforcement, civil services, and beyond.
Breaking Barriers, Building Brighter Futures
Ensuring that girls have the opportunity to pursue and complete their education, as well as transition to higher studies, is pivotal.Investments in educational infrastructure, scholarships, life skills programs, and STEM opportunities can open doors to new possibilities. As Nayana emphasizes, “Education is not just a pathway for individual growth; it’s the foundation of a stronger, more equitable society.”
Parents also play a transformative role in shaping their daughters' futures. Encouraging families to dream beyond traditional roles for their daughters can unlock endless potential. “When parents stand behind their daughters’ aspirations,” says Nayana, “it inspires them to fearlessly pursue their dreams, even in the face of challenges. The greatest gift a parent can give a girl is not just protection, but belief in her abilities and the confidence to take on the world.”
Empowering girls further requires the collective effort of entire communities. It is crucial to involve local leaders, elders, and community groups to create safer environments and broader acceptance for girls to pursue their ambitions. Breakthrough’s initiatives have shown how community backing and engagement can result in remarkable progress, from increasing school enrollments to ensuring girls’ safe mobility, while also playing a significant role in reducing early marriages and encouraging a shift towards higher education and career opportunities.
Challenging gender norms and addressing everyday violence against girls is essential for long-term change. Programs that focus on attitude and behaviour shifts at both the individual and societal levels can create a ripple effect, enabling girls to envision careers beyond traditional expectations.
A Personal Perspective: Leading from the Front
Nayana recounts her own experiences growing up in West Bengal where she witnessed firsthand the impacts of caste, religion, and class discrimination. "I come from a small city and studied in a regional medium school, which did not have much infrastructure or exposure," she shares. "Now, I have come out, but the system needs to be such that I should not be an exception. Systems must support the majority of girls to reach here, so those breaking out of their shackles and becoming something in their lives don’t remain exceptions."
She continues, "At this point, Breakthrough is witnessing the inspiring journey of a hundred girls who have gone out of their villages and are becoming first-generation career women. They are looking for careers not traditionally seen as women’s roles in their areas. But for true progress, families, schools, societal infrastructure, and government policies must ensure that these women do not remain anomalies. Imagine a future where hundreds of girls from every village in India break barriers and fulfil their true potential—this must become the norm."
A Vision for the Future: Empowering Girls for a Brighter Future
India has no shortage of talented and ambitious youth, particularly girls, but the systems in place must support them and provide them opportunities for growth. “We are fortunate to witness the transformative and empowering journey of young girls from all our intervention areas,' Nayana observes." “But our vision must be broader: a future where hundreds of girls from every village break barriers and fulfil their potential. Girls achieving their dreams should not be exceptions but the norm.At Breakthrough, our efforts have consistently focused on helping girls build their aspirations. This year, the theme for National Girl Child Day aligns well with the message we have been championing in recent years: ‘Empowering Girls for a Brighter Future.”
The journey ahead is challenging but filled with promise. Through collaborative efforts involving policymakers, educators, civil society, and families, India can create an ecosystem that nurtures the aspirations of its girls. Regular dialogues and partnerships at every level can address deep-seated issues and pave the way for transformative future where every girl’s potential is realized—a future that is brighter for all.
