Is the Jumpsuit going to out-frock the cocktail dress?

Recently Scarlett Johansson stepped out in a jumpsuit to promote her new film. And it wasn't a flash in the pan! Kerry Washington rocked a Roksanda number at Paleyfest this year. Also, falling for the allure of the onesie was Anne Hathaway, who was seen in Vivienne Westwood at the April premiere of Colossal. Not too long ago, Solange Knowles married in a romper from Stéphane Rolland. In India, Sonam Kapoor has been the jumpsuit pro - nailing it everywhere from the airport to the red carpet. At Amazon India Fashion Week, Alia Bhatt was seen sashaying in a Namrata Joshipura fringed sequinned jumpsuit. Priyanka Chopra recently hosted a bash where she looked every bit the elegant hostess in a salmon sequinned Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna jumpsuit. But the questions remains - can a jumpsuit totally replace the cocktail dress? Let's hear out our style arbiters...

Doesn't suit every body type

Anaita Shroff Adajania, Fashion Director, Vogue India leans more in favour of the cocktail dress because she feels that the jumpsuit doesn't suit everybody type. "The dress is a great pick for summer as it's so airy - one can opt for it with a low front or a low back. Also, for red carpet, it's crucial that the jumpsuit is custom-made. A loose printed jumpsuit may work on a beach but on the red carpet fitting is key," says Anaita. 
Often actresses get photographed very badly in jumpsuits which bunch around the crotch and bust causing unsightly creases.

Take a break from princess look 

But there are those who're all for the jumpsuit and think of it as a breath of fresh air. 
Designer Payal Singhal says, "I'm sick of gowns. What a lot of people don't understand is that not every woman wants to look like a princess. What if I don't have a girlie style. There are edgy women, who don't like dresses," says the designer, who recently showcased a low crotch jumpsuit. Singhal suggests that the jumpsuit should be beautifully tailored and fit you like a glove.

Easy and effortless 

Stylist Anisha Jain suggests that one can play around with it so much, which one can't do with a dress. "Jumpsuit is rather edgy but a cocktail dress is in a single-mindedly pretty zone."
She cautions, "You have to pick the right one and avoid the Camel Toe situation. Having said that, a gown can never go out of fashion. I am all for colour and no embroidery. Nothing makes a statement than a solid colour gown."

Takkar to the gown 

Stylist Divyak D'Souza is of the belief that there should be no formula to style. He says, "Even twin separates paired together work well. It takes a certain body type and confidence to pull it off," says he.
