Last October, Adishwar Kumar Jain held an exhibition, Paper in Space, of 67 of his works at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. This was the second time the torn paper collage artist displayed his creations at the famed gallery. Using discarded magazines, news papers, labels, old greeting cards and calendars among other things, Adish presents an eclectic mix of visuals.

Though not formally trained in art, Adish was naturally inclined towards the medium since his childhood and spent many a happy hours while in school and college, pursuing his hobby. Working as a marketing manager in a textile company in Punjab during the days of Emergency, Adish honed his skills as an artiste. “The curfew would be on post 3 in the afternoon, so I would use that time in the evening to make paintings,” he recalls.

It was in the early ’80s that the artist got drawn towards making torn paper collages. “I had come down to Mumbai and I happened to see an exhibition in Jehangir Art Gallery. The torn paper works were made by a lady from Orissa, who, I later discovered, was a rag picker. I got so inspired that even I tried my hand at them. I have been making them since,” he states. It was Adish’s dream to display his creations at the gallery and he’s done it twice already, once in 2012 and now again, in October 2018.

While his frames have been shown in various places in the country, internationally, too, he has received accolades for his unique artwork. Palace Art Gallery in England exhibited his works in March, 2017, while in September 2018, his collage paintings were on display at the hall of Best Western, Milton, Canada in a Music & Art show organized by International Art Centre, Canada.

Ask Adish where he seeks inspiration and pat comes the reply, “My travels. I have visited 15 countries so far and my artistic feelings always come to the fore, each time I visit a new place.  If you see my works, you will notice that each of them is associated with travelling.” The artiste, who manages to take time out from his busy schedule as a Senior VP of a textile company,  to indulge in his favourite hobby, is now gearing up to display his works at another show. He says, “The work never stops. If an expression strikes me at 3 am, I head towards the canvas!”
