Whether you’ve got your first few silvery strands or are looking to switch up your natural hair colour, sporting the ‘grandma’ hue is cool
Spotted your first few greys? Fear not, because you are in good company. A number of celebrities have been happily flaunting their white strands, even on the red carpet. Katie Holmes at this year’s Grammy’s styled her dark locks in a slick pixie allowing her natural greys to show through. Jessica Biel, meanwhile, walked the red carpet at the Golden Globes with her silver roots on display, proving one need not run to a colourist every few weeks. Chrissy Teigen too has admitted to having a “skunk like streak of grey hair” with her tweet encouraging other women to post pictures of their own natural hair. While men have been called silver foxes or salt and pepper while showing their natural colour, women have often been told to cover them up.
Kim Kardashian West may have only recently found her first grey but that hasn’t stopped the reality star from rocking ashy shades in the past. Anisha Fernandes Tavares, Senior stylist and make-up artist from Nalini of Nalini & Yasmin Salon says today more women are embracing their natural colour. “It’s quite bold and admirable to grow out your greys. Natural grey hair can be coloured with different shades of fashion hues in apt placement for a cool style. You can opt for placements to get an ombré effect or colour it all grey,” she says. Try to use a silver shampoo to maintain the shade and enhance the tone in the hair.
One needs to get a stylist to understand your requirements. Patrick Cameron, Wella Professionals expert, recommends toning the grey till you achieve a pretty silver shade. He adds that grey hair with a dark behind works well and in fact can look beautiful. “A salt and pepper look though can be more ageing. The tricky part with greys is getting it to look clean. Today there are so many appliances and products that you can achieve any look you desire,” he adds.
A number of young stars are also experimenting with this hue. Ariana Grande went grey with a lavender tinge late last year. Kylie Jenner too has flaunted this in the past. This hair colour trend is on the increase, according to research by a leading hair care brand and many are now teaming the granny hue with youthful pinks and purple. Dimitri Lafiandra, Master consulting beauty expert, Silhouette Salon says he loves the shade. “It’s fantastic. Sometimes you just have to adjust the amount of them to make it more fresh, that’s all. Some people can carry off silver streaks, but it’s not for everybody. Personally, I love more colours, I don’t like to bleach the hair too much. You have to put a corrector to play with the silver tone. Otherwise, if you are not very confident of the colour, it’s best not to wear it. For some people it’s nice to have that funky colour,” he says.
