Rosalind Pereira’s jewellery show, Maya, will display narratives in charrakkaam (handmade threaded pieces) practised by the patwas (traditional weavers from the Hindi belt of India) and crochet by women from underprivileged segments. The designer and entrepreneur says that the production for the show as well as her brand of ethnic jewellery, Mayabazaar, have been green when sustainable fashion was not in vogue. She says, “In keeping with this mantra, we invite people to bring broken pieces of jewellery and hope to repair and infuse a second life into them.”

EMPOWERING ARTISANS

The development professional has been empowering women and grass-roots-level artisans (including men) for over 21 years. Rosalind states, “The cornerstone of our philosophy is that traditional crafts can and will survive with sensitive inputs of design and product development, making pieces that are relevant in an urban context.” She adds that the skilled workers can share this journey when it comes with a strong economic blueprint and not from a charitable angle. “If traditional crafts have to survive, they should be financially viable from day one. It’s a challenge for small organisations like ours when fast fashion is the norm.”

SENSITIVE INTERVENTION

The craft crusader started working with charrakkaam when hand-knotting was either not heard of or associated with NGO melas. “Now, many designers use it, which in a sense is great. It’s one of the reasons I started the brand,” she states, “If intervention is not sensitive, it would be painful to see the craft’s dilution instead of enrichment.” With her upcoming spring summer collection, Rosalind aims to create timeless pieces that are easy to wear in multiple ways and are durable so that they don’t end up in a landfill. “We believe that green or conscious fashion is a necessity, not an option,” she concludes.
