Most importantly, Gaudi was the designer of the Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family also known as the Sagrada Família. The church is now a World Heritage Site according to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation). Gaudi is known to have been inspired by oriental arts of India and Persia which he knew through various studies of architectural theoreticians of his age.

Carlos Flores mentioned in Les lliçons de Gaudí that Gaudi was a great fan of Islamic art. He appreciated it for its spatial uncertainty, its concept of structures with limitless space; its feeling of sequence, fragmented with holes and partitions, which create a divide without disrupting the feeling of open space by enclosing it with barriers. Some of Antonie's personal work suggested that he was a strict vegetarian and was known to preserve severe fasts that were life-threatening. Gaudi died on June 7, 1926 when he was struck by a passing tram on the streets of Barcelona.
