Fed up of all those expensive hair treatments? Here's how to get that lustrous shine
Reduce the shampoo
While commuting daily in the city does take a toll on the hair, over shampooing can be doing your locks harm. Those with oily hair may need to shampoo more often, but those with dry or thick hair mane shouldn't wash more than twice a week. Over-washing can take away essential oils from the scalp, causing it to become dry and dull.
Use the right products
Wavy hair tends to be drier than straight and more rougher to touch. Opt for a moisturising shampoo and conditioner and before styling, apply a good serum or a curl cream with shine enhancers to mend the damage in the cuticle and improve shine. These also help in detangling the knots. Another option for those wanting to add shine, is applying conditioner to hair first and then just shampooing the roots, so that the cuticle remains smooth.
Cold water wash
There's a reason why the stylist at your local salon washes out your conditioner with cold water. A short blast of the cool water helps to smooth and close the hair's cuticle, which allows it to reflect light making it look shiny. It also helps to seal in the moisture from the conditioner leaving your hair soft.
Work on split ends
It's important to get regular trims every six weeks. A good haircut can make hair look its best by removing the most damaged strands, the ends. Another option is to use a split end mender on the frayed strands. Healthy hair will always shine the most.
Vinegar rinse
Time to raid your kitchen cabinet. Vinegar, yes the same ingredient we use for salads and cooking makes for an excellent solution for dull hair. It helps to seal the hair cuticles, which helps reflect light, adding much-needed shine. While most types of vinegar can work, try using apple cider vinegar. Spray some onto wet hair, leave in for a few minutes, and then rinse out well. Another option is to combine two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and lemon juice squeezed from a lemon to one cup of water and use as your final hair rinse.
