On Wednesday, the Mithibai canteen saw some unusual action — college kids swapping pens for butter knifes and dishing up sandwiches. We soon discovered that they were taking part in what they called as their own version of Masterchef called Smarterchef, with a tagline that went by as, ‘Where cooking is just an excuse’.

This was actually an initiative by SVKM’s Harkisan Mehta Foundation Institute of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Director of the institute Joyanto Mukherjee told us, “The idea was to provide students with a creative project via which they would get practical training in branding and selling.”

Advertising students were given ingredients to cook up a dish which they were later supposed to sell in the college canteen. Students were supposed to name the dish, create jingles and taglines to attract crowd and sell them too.  And the journalism students were asked to cover the event as food critiques. We hear each group managed to sell off all their dishes and earned around Rs 3000.
