Homelands — a collection culled from the art collection of over 8,500 works of the British Council — brings together contemporary works in different media from around the globe. Indian curator, Latika Gupta, put together these 80 works while grappling with the ideas of home — where one lives, and homeland — where one belongs. “Homeland rings in geography, culture and shared practices which, while invoking a sense of belonging also sometimes involves a greater sense of exclusion. Each piece on display will resonate with viewers differently and appeal to a unique emotion for them.”

The collection remarkably features only one painting and a myriad of other forms of expression including ceramics, video works, sound installations, etchings, photographs and much more.

Artist Zineb Sedira will be in Mumbai for the opening and during her stay in the city, she will deliver a series of public lectures and conduct workshops at local art institutions. Her best known piece will be on display with the collection — Mother Tongue (2002), a video triptych showing the generational shift of languages in her family over the course of successive migrations — her Algerian parents’ Arabic, her own French, and her daughter’s English.

Other artists whose works will be showcased include Angus Boulton, Fabien Cappello, Lisa Cheung, Nathan Coley, Jeremy Deller, Suki Dhanda, Jimmie Durham, Paul Graham, Graham Gussin, Mona Hatoum, Anthony Haughey, Tim Hetherington, Susan Hiller, David Hockney, Anthony Lam, Langlands & Bell, Richard Long, Rachel Lowe, Haroon Mirza, Raymond Moore, Cornelia Parker, Martin Parr, Grayson Perry, George Shaw, David Shrigley, Bob and Roberta Smith and Gillian Wearing.
