This season is packed with back-to-back parties and events. And with glamorous updos being in vogue, all the dressing up is sure to take a toll on the tresses. Styling tools such as hair straighteners and curling irons are an easy way to get your locks ready for a night out, but regular use can cause damage. If your locks have turned frizzy and brittle recently, all the styling could be to blame. After Hrs finds out how to keep the hair shiny and healthy.

TURN DOWN THE HEAT

For those who have been styling hair a lot recently, pre and post-care treatments are necessary. Apply a leave-in conditioner or argan oil serum to protect and hydrate the hair, suggests Anisha Fernandes Tavares, Senior stylist and make-up artist, Nalini of Nalini & Yasmin Salon. “While styling hair with a dryer, iron or curler, use a heat-protecting product like my favourite Trillant by Sebastian which ensures that hair retains its quality after styling. Check that your styling tool temperature is not more than 190 degrees. You can also opt for styles that just require less blowdrying. Olaplex treatments are advisable for those with coloured strands,” she adds.

CHANGE UP YOUR HAIRSTYLE

With the strain of modern city life, it’s likely that your hair is as stressed as you are. Dust, pollution, not protecting your hair enough from heated tools or post a chemical service can leave the mane severely damaged. Damaged hair not only lacks moisture and lustre but elasticity as well and this makes it prone to breakage, split ends and hair fall, opines Adhuna Bhabani, Founder and Creative Director, BBLUNT. “There is a constant pressure to look good and change one’s hairstyle. Give the styling tools a break and instead master the top knot for a cool day look. For the night, unravel your top knot into cascading waves. These long layers enhance the natural movement of the hair creating an effortlessly sexy, tousled look,” she says, adding that one should follow it up with apt products. The Repair Remedy trio comprising a shampoo,    conditioner and leave-in cream is infused with a special blend of keratin and argan oil with colour-protect properties that are perfect for brittle and damaged hair.

INDULGE IN A HAIR TREATMENT

As we have entered the busiest time of the year socially, the amount one blow dries and styles the hair increases considerably. If the hair is being subject to so much heat, colour and styling, appropriate steps to prevent hair damage is essential, says Sneha J Jhaveri, owner and creative head Vous Salon. “Ideally a quick oil application, or applying fresh aloe vera on the scalp before a wash, at least once a week when the scalp is being exposed to so much heat, is a great idea. Heat over dries the scalp, which causes itchiness. Try and use a hair mask too. If it’s not possible to go to a salon for a treatment, twice a week for 15 minutes is good enough to tide you over. If you feel that the hair is falling in spite of the care you are taking, try a Hair botox treatment. This helps to increase blood circulation, and exfoliate the scalp, removing dead cells and unclogging pores,” suggests Sneha, who advises clients not to leave hairspray or mousse in the hair for many days.
