The shade is a hot favourite for eye make-up this season with everyone from David Beckham to Kaia Gerber sporting it
In what is probably one of his most daring looks to date, David Beckham shocked his fans recently when he donned green eye make-up for a magazine cover. The former football star fronted Love Magazine looking dapper in a cream suit with jade green highlighting his eyes and a matching shade on his neck tattoos. The bold look further cemented Beckham’s place as a style icon to reckon with. While it takes much courage for a man to flaunt make-up, it has found takers in many leggy beauties too. Kendall Jenner went the neon route to bring in New Year’s Eve pairing her green top with a matching electric liner, voluminous lashes and a glossy lip. Camilla Belle proved she’s not shy to experiment with colours either when she showed up for the Golden Globe awards sporting a striking emerald smoky eye that complemented her gown. Meanwhile, Kaia Gerber took the trend to another level when she walked the ramp for Valentino with emerald-toned crystals adoring her eyes.
While green may be trending abroad, make-up expert Clint Fernandes feels Indian women are still sceptical of wearing such hues. “Use it as a kohl pencil instead of an eyeshadow. I’ve used green kohl inside the eye and it looks fabulous. Emerald shades and metallic greens work well with Indian and Western wear. These also suit our skin tones.”
If going for an eyeshadow, one needs to match it with the outfit,” he says, adding that women here don’t experiment as much with make-up. He sees the green eye trend catching on more with millennials. Use a shadow in this shade to highlight a smoky eye or layer it over gold shadow for a striking effect.
At the last Teen Choice Awards, Lucy Hale made heads turn in a strapless dress styled with a jewel green eye and statement earrings. Mila Kunis too opted for a deep hue when she attended The Tonight Show last year using green shadow to bring out her hazel eyes. Closer home, it was Deepika Padukone, who at the 2017 Cannes, teamed her emerald Brandon Maxwell gown with a smudged antique green shadow. Make-up expert Cory Walia says that in order to carry it off, one should be capable of making a statement. “You have to own the green eyeshadow. Green as an eye colour dates back to ancient Egypt where they used to crush minerals to make a powder and mix it with oil and smear it on eyelids. The hue is apt for brides as it symbolises fertility and prosperity. I like to combine it with gold or bronze or a hint of shimmer. In fact, nothing complements coral (the Pantone colour of the year) like green,” he says. The key is to use the right tone and proportion of the shade. “I’m glad Beckham brought the trend to the forefront. Not many can own it as he did,” adds Cory.

GREEN GODDESSES: Mila Kunis, Lucy Hale, Kendall Jenner, Rita Ora and Emma Stone
It’s not just deep green that’s having a moment. Emma Stone attended the New York Film Festival recently sporting a lime green-winged liner with her monochrome outfit. Rita Ora, meanwhile, went all out pairing her animal print mini with shimmery green eyes. However, not everyone is a fan. Make-up expert Mallika Bhat says, “The only thing green in my kit is a kohl pencil that I smudge with black kohl. A shadow or liner in this shade is a no-no for me.”
