While a few may feel that dating is nothing but a farce in India, there are others who believe that people do ‘date’.

Actress Anushka Sharma thinks dating as a concept does not really exist in India. The actor who is currently single also rues about the fact that she hardly ever meets anyone who fits the bill.
Talking about it she says, “I don’t know what defines a date. I could casually be going out for coffee with a friend but that does not
necessarily mean it is a date. Moreover, dating as a concept is not encouraged in our country because nobody here really ‘dates’.
Two people meet and then they either get into a relationship or they don’t do anything about it. It is not like they keep going on dates,” she asserts.
On the contrary, actor Sarah Jane Dias does think that dating certainly exists in India. When asked about her relationship status, she does say that she is dating someone. “Dating is not an Indian concept but it exists for sure. I have friends who go out on dates. Personally I feel dating is another name for the courtship period, so yes, it certainly does exist.”
Preethi Deora, college student, is of the view most people date due to peer pressure. The 19-year-old is open to a relationship but is alien to the dating concept. “Frankly, I don’t know what it means. I have been out with a couple friends and with guys separately as well but it wasn’t a date. I wasn’t romantically inclined so how is that a date then? Any guy I go out with seems to be ‘my date’ so it’s weird,” she says.
Psychologist Deepti Makhija however has her own take. “Dating could even mean going out and meeting your female friends. Essentially, it means getting to know or understanding the other person and that could be possible with either sex. Dating has been glamourised by television. School children in the 8th and 9th standards ask each other out on a date. And all this is only due to it being shown on television,” she adds.
