Our lives have been difficult since the bad-boy Coronavirus entered our lives. People have witnessed all sorts of tragedies – from losing our jobs to our near and dear ones become a memory. Time has been tough on all of us.

While the world is drowning in self-doubt and anxiety, certain people have become the anchor to keep the world stable. These people are the superheroes, the protectors of mankind. Superpowers don’t make superheroes rather it’s the mindset that matters. Amidst the covid crisis, where people are choosing to stay at home and protect themselves, it’s superheroes like Sofia Khan, who make it their business to protect the people.

Sofia Khan is a social activist who works as a teacher in a government school, a powerful combination indeed. She joined a non-government organization (NGO) called the “Udaan Empowering Women” as a secretary in the year 2016.  She is also the Vice President at the National Human Rights Organization of North Kolkata. Also, she was the secretary of the Rotary club of the Kolkata University in 2018. She has conducted many literary campaigns in various parts of the country. Sofia is a firm believer in Women’s Empowerment. She shows her support to the women through her works. She protested for the girls of the Milli Al-Ameen College For Girls to help them to sit for their exams.

Sofia has always been very involved in society and tries her best to provide as much as she can. In the pandemic, when most of us were worrying about food and having depressing thoughts, Sofia was busy feeding the poor and the needy. Throughout the lockdown in last year and as well as this year, she made sure people around her were fed. During the first lockdown in 2020, she helped numerous migrant workers to go back to their hometowns and also help them with groceries. This year when second wave was on its pick and people were dying without oxygen she was there to help people across West Bengal with free oxygen cylinders. She later extended the help and converted 4 cars into free ambulance service with oxygen cylinders for Covid patients.

Sometimes, when people are helping others, if there is any hindrance like a cyclone, people’s confidence tends to waver but Sofia wasn’t one of those. She continued food distribution even when Mother Nature was protesting. The Yaas and Amphan cyclones brought in a lot of destruction with them, however, Sofia kept on fighting. She sent relief materials like drinking water, clothes, biscuits, cakes, etc. to Sandeshkhali for about a thousand families that were affected by the cyclones. In addition, she also helped victim families by proving them with tarpaulins and rations. She has been actively helping out the needy. She also encourages others to come forward and contribute as much as they can.

In one of her posts on Facebook, she posted that ‘We learnt to help each other, We learnt to pray not only for ourselves but for everyone even if we don’t know them, We learnt that basic needs are only food, clothes, and shelter.’

Sofia Khan is an inspiration to all those who want to bring a change to the world. Sofia has been supporting everything that she believes in to bring a change to human society.  Only having thoughts is not enough, people must take action. She contributed to society in every way that she could.
