If you’re an anglophile, harbour a fascination for the timeless tradition of the English high tea, then you have to check out Thomas Goode & Co’s first new outpost in almost 200 years; a boutique and museum at the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai.

Having been a Downton Abbey fan myself, visiting the luxury retailer’s showroom and the museum  and enjoying high tea was like being transported into an age of decadence and excess when the fine art of entertaining was a way of being. The brand, which was founded in 1827 and which has occupied the same 18,000 sq. ft showroom on Mayfair’s South Audley Street since 1945, sells an unrivalled collection of the world’s finest table top items. Glassware, silverware, china and home accessories from brands including Sevres, Herend, Baccarat and Hermes sit alongside TG’s own collection of extraordinary designs. Having long been a destination retailer for Londoners and visitors to the capital, the brand is proud of its global clientele, who return to the store for its incredible heritage, as well as for its collection of products that cannot be found elsewhere.

The iconic institution has now cemented its global reputation as one of the finest names in luxe retail by opening a new store in Mumbai, as well as museum space showcasing some of the most important historical pieces ever made by the brand. In partnership with Malvika Poddar, one of India’s leading fashion industry figures, the luxury retailer’s Chairman Johnny Sandelson has selected the Oberoi Hotel in the city as the brand’s first international location.

Having taken ownership of the brand earlier this year, Johnny is dedicated to transforming this historic luxury brand into a truly global name in retail. He comments, “Since its inception, TG has been focused on providing its global client base with the very best service. From our presence at the Great Exhibition in Paris in 1889, to William Goode’s many-month voyages delivering his work to clients across the world, the retailer has always cared deeply about providing a personal service both at home and internationally.”

History & Milestones

Established in 1827 in the heart of Mayfair, Thomas Goode & Co is a London institution; long recognised as the home of the world’s finest china, silverware and glass, it is a byword for luxury and exquisite craftsmanship.

The business was transformed in the mid 19th century into London’s tableware emporium by Thomas Goode’s son, the enterprising William Goode, who travelled the world in search of the finest porcelain and bone china designs. William Goode’s diaries (still held in the luxury retailer’s  archive) document his grand tours through Eastern Europe and Russia, and the porcelain houses he explored along the way.

The luxury retailer was granted its first Royal Warrant in 1863, and is proud that this tradition has continued, having been granted Royal Warrants most recently by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Prince of Wales.

Today, the epochal institution’s elegant Mayfair showrooms display an unrivalled selection of the world’s finest names in table top, featuring not only the TG Collection which is handcrafted by British potteries in Stoke-on-Trent, but also porcelain by Herend and Meissen; fine china by Royal Crown Derby; glass and crystal ware by Saint Louis, Lalique and William Yeoward; and flatware and silver by Puiforcat, Odiot and Cristofle.
