As the wedding season gets into full swing, designer duo Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor are all set to present their latest collection for the year. The designers who started off 12-13 years back, steered clear of prêt and always remained focused on bridal couture. “We don’t like wholesale orders, but prefer to customise our outfits to suit the brides and grooms. Wedding wear and jewellery has remained our strong point and we don’t see ourselves diversifying into other fields of design,” admit the designers who only display their creations in their own standalone stores.
They feel that fashion has become so global today that more brides are opting for gowns and unique pieces that aren’t very traditional. “Gowns have become a must-have for a pre-bridal function or the reception. Brides are not happy with the same tried-and-tested ensembles; they’re willing to experiment and want a statement piece,” they add. Keeping this in mind, Anjalee and Arjun who will be showing at a bridal fashion week today will display their line of couture gowns, anarkalis, sherwanis and lehengas fitted on top and with voluminous bottoms. The collection has a Victorian theme and features Jamevaar work in a jewelled format, with the colours ranging from corals, to ruby and gold.
The designers have opted to have actor Bipasha Basu as their showstopper. “Bipasha is not only a friend, but someone who has a great body and can carry off anything. She’s a confident, glamourous woman, and fits in with our brand,” they add.
Constantly having a B-Town name associated with their collections, the designers confess that actors work in their favour. “There’s a lot of hype surrounding stars. So even if you don’t want to, having a celebrity works as an added touch of glamour,” they say.
The designers, excited by the growth in the wedding market, now plan to expand their work to the UK. “Today everyone wants a fairytale wedding. Each parent wants to give their child the best wedding possible, and so they’re willing to spend as much as their budget permits,” they say.
