So you know you will be having the time of your life this Holi, what with the vibrant colours, pretty girls, and yes, bhang (for those not in the know, it’s a concoction made with the buds and leaves of the cannabis plant) and thandai flowing copiously! Sure, there’s no harm in having a little fun, but you do not want to end up bearing a splitting headache, or worse, uncontrollable hysteria. But don’t fret, there’s help at hand.

Detoxifying the body to get rid of the after-effects of a bad bhang hangover is important. Dr Sujata Udeshi, a nutritionist, says, “Skip all milk products and go for vegetable juices and anti-oxidant rich veggies like coriander and tomatoes.”

She also recommends that one doesn’t skip regular meals.

“Have a light soup, salad, fruits and yogurt. People feel that rice is easier on the body, but that’s not true. Stick to rotis to avoid stress on digestion, skip the spices and stick to only haldi and salt if you’re cooking veggies,” Udeshi advises.

Yes, of course, there will be one too many parties to attend, given that Holi falls on a long weekend this time. And, of course, you’d want to give in to the temptation of rich, oily foods. So prepare to go on a detox diet for the next one week.

“Modify your diet, decrease chemically processed food intake. Go for daliya or a light porridge, add a fistful of sprouts, some citrus fruits like oranges and lemon,” says Udeshi.

Needless to add that water cleanses the body. So drink gallons. And no, do not touch coffee; it will only dehydrate the body futher. A glass of butter milk, with a pinch of rock salt would do. And if you still find yourself tottering away, check with yourself. Are you sure it isn’t a love hangover?
