And that girl who walks around always looking like a rainbow. But how sure are you that the jewellery you have chosen goes perfectly with the outfit you’re wearing…does it really matter? Yes, it does. While one’s innate personality cannot and should not be suppressed—after all, our quirks make us into truly unique individuals—a few helpful hints should be kept in mind to create a flawless look and to make a lasting impression.
Matching contrasts, not samenessGone are the days when one was taught to match a red outfit with red earrings—the colours of your jewellery need not match your outfit. What is required is sensible colour play. Take a close look at the colour wheel to understand how it works. For example, a lemon yellow outfit goes well with a purple-coloured gemstone necklace. The idea is to make your jewellery pop out and not let it fade into the same colour as the outfit.
Casual & chic
For a casual day out with friends at the movies or a lazy brunch, skip the serious-looking jewellery in favour of something light and breezy. Short skirts and hot pants look best with either rustic-looking jewellery such as burnished gold or nature-inspired jewellery such as stone beads or glasswork.
The little black dress
We all own this holy grail of dresses—the LBD. While the classic little black dress is best paired with a strand of pearls, you can experiment a bit by going in for a big, chunky gold cuff or slim gold chains bunched up together. A bib style necklace in bright colours can also work with an LBD as long as you have the confidence to carry it with élan. “A cocktail ring, cuff, or a statement neckpiece, any one thing teamed with your LBD can transform the outfit,” states noted jewellery designer, Falguni Mehta.
Riot of colours
Taking cue from the above, don’t ever commit the faux pas of matching coloured prints with multi-coloured jewellery. A disaster such as this would surely beckon the fashion police, in addition to blinding everyone around you with such a riot of colours. The trick is to pick one dominant colour from your outfit and then select jewellery in that colour. Remember, either the outfit needs to be busy or the jewellery—one should never clash with the other.
