LED light therapy is said to help boost collagen production, treat fine lines and prevent acne formation on the skin
Every woman desires youthful, blemish-free skin and spending some time under a coloured light may just get you one step closer to that goal. LED light therapy is a non-intrusive, rejuvenating treatment that works by using light-emitting diode (LED) technology to increase the rate of skin cell renewal. It claims to help not only with acne but other skin issues like rosacea and eczema, as well as combat fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage. The painless treatment is often offered by spas to clients seeking a relaxing experience. Further, different coloured lights are used for various benefits. Violet light helps with blackheads, green light can heal rosacea; orange lightens skin tone; red stimulates collagen and blue is suited for acne issues. The esthetician will choose which light works best for your skin type and each session lasts about 15-20 minutes. Experts say that while it does have long-term benefits, one shouldn’t expect a drastic difference post each treatment. LED light therapy can either be done as part of a facial or as a standalone treatment.
Gives a youthful glow
Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, MD Skin, Dr Trasi’s Clinic & La Piel, explains LED was first developed by NASA. “The therapy works by sending energy producing packets of lights into the deeper layers of the skin. The red light stimulates the fibroblasts that produce collagen which gives skin a youthful and improved look. LED machines can also minimise fine lines, wrinkles; treat sun damaged skin, and stretch marks. Blue light works by killing bacteria deep in the skin responsible for acne and shrinks enlarged pores. There are no side effects of LED light therapy as such and there is no risk of burning or recovery time required,” she says. Studies have shown that when skin is exposed to LED light, hydration is increased.
Need repeated sessions
LED is a relatively new skin therapy in India and has been slowly gaining popularity says Dr Vinod Vij, senior cosmetic surgeon, Nova Specialty Hospitals. “This treatment may encourage normal cell turnover and the production of collagen. It is completely pain free and can be used by any age-group. Since it is not a single procedure and requires many sessions, you cannot compare the results with surgical treatments. While safe to use, a test is required, specifically for those with sensitive skin to avoid inflammation and redness.”
Use with caution
Dr Apratim Goel, consultant dermatologist and laser surgeon, Cutis skin studio says, this therapy works in reducing sebum and oil secretion and inhibits inflammatory cytokines. “It also helps with skin toning, firming and diminishing of lines. However, its long term effects have not been studied.”
