1.Aries (March 21 - April 19)
A fire sign that propels those born under it into a life of activities, excitement and adrenaline. What better beach for an Aries then than Venice Beach, that hectic Los Angeles landmark where bodybuilders, hip hop CD peddlers, artisans, beach merchants, tech industry scooterists, actors, alternative medicine doctors and many others all mingle right next one of the world’s greatest and most famous beaches. Sure, Jim Morrison was a (perfectly stereotypical) Sagittarius, but his time in Venice (commemorated on a famous mural there) added to the tapestry of variety and electricity that makes this beach the perfect spot for your dynamic Aries.
2.Taurus (April 20 - May 20)
Taurus are notorious seekers for the absolute best things in life. If the High Life beckons, Taurus doesn’t mind pulling the old credit card to splurge on a unique experience, and so we would recommend they pay a visit to the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes. This luxury oceanfront complex occupies its own peninsula, offers amenities like golf and a spa, and features exclusive beach access for those staying there. The privacy and concierge treatment of a posh, controlled location like the Terranea should also very much appeal to the Taurus’ unusually reserved nature.
3.Gemini (May 21 - June 20)
Much has been written about the supposed “dual” nature of Gemini, but less people realize that both of the twins are very much like children, always needing to discover, entertain and be entertained. The “flippety floppety” nature of the Gemini should have a field day at the Leo Carrillo State Park. Accessed through a tunnel underneath PCH (that alone should tickle Gemini’s inner explorer), Leo Carrillo is known for its fascinating tide pools full of psychedelic sea creatures and its network of caves. If your goal is constant amazement and childlike excitement, Leo Carrillo offers the perfect setting for the perfect beach day for Gemini children of all ages.
4.Cancer (June 21 - July 22)
The intel on Cancer is that, much like its totemic crab, they are hard outside and soft inside. Many beaches around Malibu feature the similar combination of architectural hard lines and luxurious water-and-sandscapes side by side, but we thought an even better choice would be the Abalone Cove Geological Reserve, in Rancho Palos Verdes. The reserve includes two beaches, Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove (doublecheck for access to the latter), where imposing rocky bluffs (the hardness) coexist with amazing views of the Pacific and dramatic sights of black sand, rare marine animals and plants and many other heart-stirring offerings (the softness) that should strike Cancer’s soul at its emo core.
5.Leo (July 23 - August 22)
Beaches are a natural setting for those born under Leo. We are talking about public locations where they can be seen and be admired, which is the not-so-secret goal of every attention-seeking Leo. With the rise of constant digital connectivity, we thought Leos would particularly enjoy a perfect beach sunset where they can mastermind the ideal selfie. You can’t really go wrong with Los Angeles sunsets, but one particularly epic one can be experienced at El Porto Beach, the section of Manhattan Beach not far from LAX which combines open views of the setting sun with the post-apocalyptic industrial architecture of the Chevron refinery. If your Leo gets the angle right, their sunset view is assured to stand out on Instagram among all those other views of fiery dusks.
6.Virgo (August 23 - September 22)
Structure is the best friend of every Virgo, even when they’re (supposedly) getting their chill on with a beachy day-off. Do not despair, because the semi-private Paradise Cove Beach in Malibu is the answer to your Virgo’s prayers for order among nature. The small beach complex off of
PCH has been providing low-key comfort and solace to several generations of Southern California beach visitors who prefer a quiet drink brought by a waiter and their own clean lawn chair by the ocean. Featuring a restaurant, bar, and a secluded beach cove, Paradise Cove is well worth the price your Virgo will pay for parking, which can be seriously discounted by eating a delicious seafood meal at the restaurant.
7.Libra (September 23 - October 22)
Those born under Libra value high status, an active life and, of course, a sense of balance. Their ideal beach of course would have to be somewhere in posh Malibu, it would have to be renowned, and would have to have length and room to run, surf and skate (see what we did with “balance”?). The obvious candidate then would be Zuma Beach, the crown jewel of Malibu, which is itself the crown jewel of Los Angeles beaches. A place to see and be seen, either on long sand walks or at busy nearby restaurants, or at the impossibly fancy The Sunset bar/restaurant on nearby Point Dume (see below), Zuma would make Libra’s feelings of doing the beach thing “just right” come to life.
8.Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)
It’s almost a cliche to say that Scorpio is all about sex, sex, sex (and drama—usually about sex), but those born under that sign seem to have embraced that stereotype as something of an asset. The absolute ideal of a Scorpio beach would be the one where Chris Isaak cavorted with
supermodel Helena Christensen on the Herb Ritts-directed video for “Wicked Game,” but that’s actually in Hawaii. Los Angeles’ friskiest beach, however, gives Chris and Helena a run for their mojo: El Matador State Beach, naturally, is an unquestionable favourite of locals (and visitors who have been tipped by locals) for any type of romantic activity at the bottom of a dramatic bluff. The only caveat to exhibitionistic Scorpios: make sure you don’t end up being unwitting extras on movies and fashion shoots, as El Matador’s striking rock formations also make it the unquestionable favourite of filmmakers and all manner of photographers.
9.Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)
Most beaches are also natural habitats for Sagittarius, as they provide ideal venues to chill, live in the moment, have lots of hedonistic fun and generally being social and entertaining. Sagittariuses also love variety in interests and enthusiasms (some would call them “flaky”), so Santa Monica State Beach should be a perfect option. Santa Monica’s 3.5 miles of beach should provide “Sags” with enough options to amuse themselves and those who love them, and once they run out of beach things to do, there’s even more stimulation at the legendary Santa Monica Pier. By the end of the beach day, as they wind down from a spin on the Ferris wheel or the historic Looff Hippodrome Carousel,
your Sagittarius should be properly exhausted—and thrilled!
10.Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)
Earth sign Capricorn loves discretion, any kind of literal and metaphorical climbing, and achievement. The rocky elevations around Point Dume State Beach, one of Southern California’s best kept, almost “secret” beaches immediately next to the public expanse of Zuma, should give Capricorns an inspiring visual for their dreams and aspirations. It doesn’t hurt that the beach is frequented by the many publicity-averse A-list celebrities and high-rollers who live nearby. The whole atmosphere at “the Dume” should tickle the Capricorn’s sense of hardworking superiority. Bonus attraction is the impeccably located, fancy The Sunset Restaurant and bar.
11.Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)
Individuality might be one of the core traits of Aquarius. And what better way to combine a unique, one-of-a-kind bespoke experience with the sign’s notorious identification with fish and all other forms of aquatic life than taking them on a Redondo County Beach Night Dive? Leaving from Redondo’s Veteran Park, these dives are considered one of the best in the County, with easy entry and exit points that make it popular with beginner divers. Night-diving Aquariuses can closely commune with rare species like octopi, sarcastic fringeheads (yup, that’s their name), baby horn sharks, scorpionfish and giant starfish. Guaranteed to make them feel really special, which is the whole idea.
12.Pisces (February 19 - March 20)
Finally, we arrive to the very, very, very active Pisces. This one is really a no-brainer: your Pisces is going to need a good surf spot. Fortunately, we don’t have to look far, as Surfrider Beach pretty much announces its mission statement right from the name. Sure, this Malibu spot might be crowded (duh, it’s where the Gidget phenomenon began and one of the world meccas of surf culture), but your Pisces will get three (3) point breaks and all the surf (longboard, shortboard, you name it) action they might want. Hang ten, my dude—or, as we say in Horoscope Land, “hang twelve.”
