As a child, Christopher Doyle was fascinated by science fiction, fantasy, mystery and suspense. “My favourite authors were Jules Verne, Isaac Asimov, H G Wells, Robert Heinlein (science fiction), JRR Tolkien (fantasy) and Arthur Conan Doyle (mystery/suspense),” the author of the bestseller The Mahabharata Quest series tells us. No wonder then that his writing has influences of all these genres. Christopher’s new book, The Pataala Prophecy: Son of Bhrigu, is a fantasy thriller series, with Son of Bhrigu being the first book of the series. The series is an exploration of Indian mythology and the ancient Vedic texts using fantasy as a medium. It’s a thriller set in modern times.

What is Son of Bhrigu all about?

The protagonists, Maya and Arjun, find themselves sucked into the search for a powerful, ancient secret that will lead to the fulfilment of a lost prophecy from the time of the Saptarishis. Along the way they discover mantras and hidden worlds as they race against time to solve the mystery of the Pataala Prophecy even as an ancient enemy rises from the depths of Pataala.

Is there a connect between mythology and mystery?

There is a lot of mystery about mythology. In the last 50 years or so, many authors have used science and mathematics to demonstrate that it is very possible that all mythology has a kernel of historical truth within it. I think it is this kind of exploration that has led to the connect between mystery and mythology.

You have a corporate job and you’re also a musician as well. How do you find time for your creative pursuits?

I prioritise my pursuits. There are times when work gets priority along with family, and writing, research and music needs to take a back seat. Then, there are times when writing and book promotion take priority and work takes a backseat for a while. And I have a very supportive wife and daughter who understand when I sometimes disappear for a week or two for my writing or book promotion.
