How the SUV went on to become family

I have a Ford Endeavour. It was bought so that we could get a chance to explore places that are difficult to reach. But, the SUV has gone beyond its initial calling. We have used the SUV - fully loaded with picnic basket and biryani - for quick family drives to Pondicherry and into the Nilgiris.

But for the last couple of years, it has been used more for our long-distance weekend cycling trips. This is because there has been an increased interest in cycling from my friends, all of whom appear to lead frantically busy lives and don't want to waste even a minute of it if they can save it.

So now the back set of seats are removed and the SUV is loaded with slow burning carbs, protein, fruits, fluids, hydration salts and spare gear, puncture repair stuff, pumps, emergency medicines, folding chairs, roll out mats, change of clothes, etc (the etc includes Simon & Garfunkle and Crosby, Nash & Young CDs) so that we can use it as a support vehicle for long distance cycling.

This means that when we do 100 to 150 km rides, the SUV becomes the backup for anyone who wants to take a break, is injured or has an equipment break down that can't be fixed. In cases like these, the bicycle and the riders are loaded into the SUV while the rest of the gang can continue to enjoy the day out.  But its most fun when you are injured. Because then you get to sit in the air conditioned SUV with some great music while you take in the countryside :)

We loaded the SUV with three bikes some time ago and did some great off road trails in the Sultana and Craigmore tea plantations near Coonoor. Then 8 hours before the weekend was to get over, we packed the SUV and came right back home. Not a moment wasted. And we cycled in exactly the places where it was most challenging (read: address mid life crisis! Except that I am too old for "mid-life").

But, so much I will say: while I feel guilty owning this monster of a vehicle, I can't do without it on these weekends!
