Guest column: How to source sustainable fabrics...

Sustainability is the buzz word across fashion today. Though sustainability is not only about the end product built but also about the process of making and buying. But a few handy tips for shopping sustainable fabrics could be helpful. Here are a few pointers that I would like to give.

Source direct

The first and foremost being — source direct, always keep a look out at craft exhibits and haats where weavers are directly selling their fabrics. This way you eliminate the middle man and offer a better price to the weaver and also this helps to establish a direct relationship for future.

Look for craft mark

Look for craft mark or handloom mark on products that are very expensive and specialised textiles like a specific weave — Benarasi etc or a special textile technique like ajrakh, or even a special count khadi. A lot of these are not distinguished between handloom and power loom. The government of India provides this mark for identifying genuine materials and helping the consumer.

Rub the fabric

For natural colours, you could do a small test of rubbing the fabric between your fingers, normally a natural dyed fabric would not be able to withhold abrasion and gives away colour, texture or strength.

Head to Craft Emporium

Visit the government-run small organisations that stock up on fabrics from across the country. Craft emporium Delhi is one such place to hunt special textiles at good prices.

Test the fabric blend

Natural yarns would burn off without leaving a residue, it’s extreme but a very solid test of the fabric blend.
