Zee JLF 2018 | Print media will leave its imprint for long: Panel

Is the mainline print media facing an existential crisis over the emergence of digital media? Does development in the regional media paints a different picture? Has the role of media changed? Is the market changing the phase of Indian media? This were the question raised during a session titled ‘Badalte Mahual Mein Media’ on the final day of ZEE JLF 2018. Following are the glimpses of the session:

LP Pant

I think present media is going through a crisis of three things, number one is political ‘Bhakti’, Cultural impatience and overflow of the information.  Readers are having more information than reporters. The challenge is the tough competition between few reporters and the people who are equipped with smartphones and has access to various modes of information. It is worth mentioning that face of editors has changed and the change is compulsory. Previously regional media use to shy away from various issues; for example Sanitary Napkin, there was no place for issues like this. What worries me is that is that one regional force takes over the government. We are going through originality crisis. The reader is the owner of the newspaper. One should always that the market is not always bad and it’s the editor who sets the agenda.

When people news were started to be neglected by newspapers, they started to look for different avenues. Social Media has given people a platform to express their views. There are many boundations on other forms of media. There is a whole lot of trash on social media but it depends on us what do we want to extract. The most important responsibility lies on print media because word never dies. Newspaper cannot afford mistakes. The awareness is slowly and gradually increasing.

Previously editorial page use to reflect the policy of the newspaper but the present scenario has changed drastically. It is very difficult to identify the policy of newspaper. In present time only 11 per cent of reader reads the editorial page of a newspaper.

Journalism is literature in hurry. The speed of media has increased, media has given a huge exposure to literature and other issues.
