Community holds memorial for Haifa martyr, Pilot joins in to show his party’s support
Centenary celebration of Haifa battle and its hero Major Dalpat Singh’s martyrdom took political turn in Jaipur on Sunday. Thousands of Ravana Rajputs gathered at Vidhyadhar Nagar in memory of the martyr.
The memorial event hosted by a community group, however, reflected upon the impact of upcoming assembly elections. A huge gathering where there was substantial display of collective strength of the community, presence of opposition party state president further confirmed of the political tilt of the event.
Congress state president Sachin Pilot too was forthright in seeking support of the community. “The community supported Congress in recent bypolls held in the state and we look forward to their extended support,” said Pilot. He assured of due ‘respect’ and share to the community under Congress government. Pilot was also prompt in targeting the BJP government for showing blatant disregard for the society at large.
“The present government has attempt to malign image of the community,” he said indicating towards the circumstances following Anandpal encounter incident. Killed in police encounter last year, Anandpal had drawn sympathy of several leaders of his community who held the encounter to be fake. They alleged the BJP government to have orchestrated the entire event and the controversy led to vehement protest from the community. Sympathy for Anandpal was also apparent at the memorial event of Dalpat Singh. There were groups at the event wearing T-shirts with Anandpal’s face printed on them while slogans against BJP government were also raised by the people present at the venue. The emotions of the disgruntled Rajput community gave a fair idea of what can be expected in the upcoimg elections and its impact on the BJP’s vote bank.
On September 23, 1918, Indian soldiers from Mysore, Jodhpur and Hyderabad liberated city of Haifa in Israel from Ottoman forces.
