Nearly one month old Ashok Gehlot government sets out for a litmus test in Ramgarh Assembly polls scheduled on January 28. The Congress, in order to continue the momentum of its victory after the recently concluded Assembly elections, has decided to intensify the poll campaigning by holding rallies of both CM Gehlot and deputy CM and PCC chief Sachin Pilot scheduled to begin from January 25.

Ramgarh seat caught national attention due to incidents of cow vigilantism reported in previous Raje government. The seat that falls in Mewat area goes to witness a triangular contest. BSP here fielded Jagat Singh, son of former foreign minister Natwar Singh, against BJP’s Sukhwant Singh and Safiya Juber from Congress. There are 20 candidates in the fray.

Jagat won as MLA on BJP ticket from Kaman in Bharatpur in 2013.When he was denied ticket he switched sides and decided to fight election on Ramgarhs seat. Incidentally Ramgarh is the seat that was represented by Gyandev Ahuja but he was denied ticket by BJP and it was given to Sukhwant Singh. Congress here has fielded Muslim candidate Safiya Juber.

How Congress performs here will indicate mood of people towards one-month old Gehlot government. As the countdown for Lok Sabha elections has started, pressure is mounting on the Congress to win the seat. The BJP, on the other hand, is eager to retain the seat in order to prove anti-incumbency against Congress and to revive the morale of party workers.

During the Assembly elections the polls for the seat was postponed in wake of death of BSP candidate Laxman Singh. Later the election authorities issued another notification scheduling polls on January 29. Counting of the votes will take place on February 2. Polling will take place in Ramgarh constituency from 8 am to 5 pm on January 28. Assembly elections took place in 199 constituencies, except Ramgarh, on December-7. Of these, Congress won 99 while one seat was won by one of its allies. The BJP got 73 seats. Six BSP candidates and 13 independents also won the elections.
