The extended date for submission of admission forms for under-graduate courses at Rajasthan University and its affiliated colleges ends today (Friday). The number of applicants though continued to remain high as over 1,900 new applications were received on Thursday, taking the aggregate number of applications around 36,000. University officials have refused any further extension of the form submission deadline as the first admission list is scheduled to be released on June 18.

The Maharani College has remained the most sought after with around 14,500 applications for nine courses. Though the college has registered a decline in number of applicants since last year when over 18,000 forms were received for the 2170 seats.

Even as the numbers are expected to rise a little on the last day there seems less possibility for the application numbers to cross the previous year’s mark. The decline in applicants though is not expected to offer any relaxation in the cut-off.

“Most students who approach us for counselling are from central board of secondary education and as the cut-off per cent for the board is expected to remain high many of these have refrained from applying in the first place,” said Rashmi Jain, vice principal of the Maharani College.

The trend has once again highlighted the challenges being faced by students from CBSE following implementation of the percentile formula. This has resulted in a huge difference between the students and last year the first cut-off for CBSE students for B. Com course at Maharani college was recorded at 96.20 per cent against 87.2 per cent for students of Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education. Even in the reserved category, the CBSE students scoring around 90 per cent were unable to secure admission in the first admission list.

Similar trends have also been seen at other constituent colleges and several of the faculties have been demanding improvement in the admission criteria.

“It’s gross injustice to the students at large, the difference in board should not become a ground for discriminating the students,” says a senior official at Rajasthan University.

However, as the system remains in practice many of the meritorious students of the CBSE board are now set to seek admission in colleges outside the state or seek admission at private colleges.

Colleges In Demand
