The demonstrating employees sought alms from citizen to fill in government’s ‘empty coffers’.
On the 14th day of their strike for demands including the 7th pay commission benefits, employees of the Rajasthan Roadways resorted to begging on streets on Sunday. The demonstrating employees sought alms from citizen to fill in government’s ‘empty coffers’.
The employees are in desperation as the model code of conduct is expected to be implemented in the state in October. Thus, while the public transport at Rajasthan stands impaired for two weeks, demonstrations get more intense on each passing day. Many employees had their head shaved on Saturday to demonstrate their protest, on Sunday they staged mass begging in various cities.
The strike invoked by a joint federation of Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) employee associations, the protest has also been extended support by the corporation officers.
As more than 4,500 state buses stand immobilized, nearly a million of the state people have their daily travel plans affected. Talks between the government and employees association have been unable to reach a solution.
Employee leaders allege that the government has previously agreed on the implementation of the pay commission and is now turning back. They held government policies responsible for the present day condition of state roadways.
The RSRTC is undergoing huge financial crisis following losses piled over years. However, according to employees, it has been due to faulty policies of the government and alleged that the state government is deliberately attempting to shut down the corporation. Meanwhile, the protesting employees have also approached state transport employee association of neighbouring states to suspend their services in Rajasthan.
