Tigress MT-2, who was brought from Ranthambore three days ago to the Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve, is getting used to the atmosphere here. On Saturday, the tigress was released from the soft enclosure to the hard enclosure. Now, MT-2 Tigress will accompany MT-1 Tiger in the large enclosure.

Officials of the Forest Department are expecting that soon there will be a couple of MT-1 Tiger and MT-2 Tigress, which will eventually increase the number of Tigers at Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve. At the same time, after the release of MT-2 Tigress in the large enclosure, the process and preparations for shifting the second tigress to the reserve have been started by both the Ranthambore and Mukundra officials.

Boundary walls have been built in 82 sq km area to protect the Tigers and wildlife in Mukundra Tiger Reserve. Chief Forest Guardian Ghanshyam Sharma said that field experts will monitor the activities of both the parts in the large enclosure. After being widened, their report will be prepared and forwarded to higher officials, so that the work on tourism prospects in Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve can be started.

It is worth noting that arrangements for security, including food and water, have been done for the Tigers in Mukundra. It is proposed to leave two Tigress and a Tiger here, out of which, one Tiger and Tigress each have been left already. The forest department is trying to bring the other Tigress from the Ranthambore National Park this month.

However, conservationists and a section of the department officials are not too happy with the development as they claim it has been done at the expense of Sariska Tiger Reserve where the department has failed to translocate even a single tiger over the past five years.

“When the reintroduction plans were drawn after the 2005 debacle at Sariska after all the big cats were lost to poaching, it was decided that after the initial translocation and keeping in view the success and development in the project, tigers would be shifted from Ranthambhore to Sariska. However, it appears over the past five years, officials higher-up in the hierarchy were averse to the idea and made sure no development in Sariska occurs,” said an official.
