Rajasthan High Court on Friday quashed the Rajasthan Rural Development and Panchayti Raj department’s order to rename Rajiv Gandhi Sewa Kendra to Atal Sewa Kendra. The department in December 2014 has changed names of Bharat Nirman Rajiv Gandhi Sewa Kendras and Jan Suvidha Kendras to Atal Sewa Kendra. The department decision was challenged by Congress leader Sanyam Lodha and a bench of justice MN Bhandari invalidated the department’s order and observed that government institutions should preferably be named after freedom fighters.

There are over 9,000, such sewa kendras providing knowledge and resource services in villages. The services though remain unaffected with the name, the decision has provided a moral victory to Congress just ahead of by-polls.

“The state government’s move was against national honour and dignity as both Rajiv Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee are respected former prime ministers and Bharat Ratna awardees. Yet, it was improper to change the name without adopting a legal process,” said the petitioner Sanyam Lodha, welcoming the court decision.

Congress have protested the government’s decision to change the names and attacked the BJP. “Whenever BJP comes to power, instead of initiating work of public welfare they indulge in changing names of popular works of Congress government, previously too they have done such activities,” said Ashok Gehlot.

An echo of the HC decision was also heard in speeches of Congress leaders campaigning for by-polls.

The victory at the court apparently has provided the Congress a new issue against the government.

Meanwhile, a copy of the decision was still awaited, the petitioner has claimed that the name of these centres will for now remain after Rajiv Gandhi till the state government comes up with a new order regarding it.
