Rajasthan: Hailstorm, rain damage crop in Hadouti

Standing crop in 28 villages of Bundi has suffered almost 100 per cent damage. Tehsildars have been asked to assess damage and submit report

Light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by heavy hailstorm, on Wednesday late evening lashed parts of Hadouti region causing huge damage to standing crops.

According to estimates, the damage in  villages of Bundi Tehsil was 100 per cent, while about 50-60 percent damage to crop in other parts of Bundi, Baran and Jhalawar districts.

The rain washes away the dreams of hundreds of farmers of earning a good yield this season.  Opium crop in Chipabarode and Harnawdashahaji areas of Baran district also suffered heavy damage due to rain and hailstorm last night. 

The district administration in respective affected areas has directed the tehsildars of the areas to carry out assessment of the crop damage and submit the report at earliest moment.

The sunny day yesterday turned disastrous by the evening with cold winds started blowing and as the evening advanced, light to moderate rain accompanied by heavy hailstorm lashed parts of Hadouti region snapping power supply for hours in Kota city and adjoining villages. The hails that stuck deep into the fields with crop roots were even after over 14 hours of the hailstorm laying unmelted.

“A hardly 20-25 minutes rainfall along with heavy hailstorm last night washed away all our dreams of getting good yield and now we are on the edge of committing suicide, if a fair compensation for the crop damage  is not  granted,” said Rameshwar Tripati of Jhawaharnagar village and claimed the entire wheat crop in his 80 bigas of field is damaged and is lying flattened.  Hailstorm, comprising hails weighing each about 2.50 to 500 grams lashed the crops last night and flattened them in the field, Humkumchand of the village said that  after a month, the same crops, which are now lying flattened,  would be ready to be reaped.

“It was no more rainfall but a heavy hailstorm, such a heavy hailstorm that I have never seen in my life so far,” said 60-year-old Kamlabai of the same village while recalling the disastrous mode of the hailstorm last night. ‘The crops in at least 43 villages of Bundi Tehsil were severely affected by hailstorm last night and of the crop in at least 28 villages have sustained 100 percent damage while the crop in remaining other villages suffered about 50-60 percent loss, Laxminarayan Prajapati, Tehsildar, Bundi Tehsil said after assessment of crop damage in these village today noon. The crops in Mandawar, Jhawaharnagar Pakalpuria, Ramganj, Umerach, Jawati, Aamli etc of the area suffered a heavy loss in hailstorm, he said, adding tentative information and data on crop damage is being currently collected and a report would soon be sent to government.
