Soon, Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) will be made available at the country liquor shops in state.

The state government in its latest excise policy has provisioned for it in order to provide consumers a less ‘harmful’ option.

“The excise department will make available cheaper brands of IMFL at the county liquor shops from May. It is aimed to shift country liquor consumers in a phased manner to the IMFL,” said Harphool Singh Yadav, Jaipur district excise officer (DEO), while informing about the development.

Sources say that the initiative is aimed to demotivate the consumers from drinking high spirit country made liquor that is ‘more’ health hazardous.

“A few brands of IMFL available below Rs 55 (180 ML) have been ordered to be made available at the country liquor shops. These brands will be available in tetra packs so the chances of adulteration could be minimised,” informed Yadav.

The Jaipur DEO office has already started exercise to auction country liquor and IMFL shops in the state capital through auction and the applications have been invited both manually and via online. The excise officer claimed that applicants enthusiastically have adopted online process and nearly 1000 applications have been received so far for 206 IMFL shops located in the city.

“The applicats need not to come to the DEO office while applying online. On March 5 the lottery of shops will be drawn. This year the application fees has been kept at Rs 23,000. We are hoping nearly 50,000 applications in Jaipur alone,” said Yadav.

After the announcement of new excise policy, the department of excise has started the process to allot liquor retail shops by lottery.

For this, the department has started accepting online applications from February 9 that would run till February 26. For Jaipur, for IMFL and beer, the annual licence fees will be Rs30 lakh which includes basic licence fees of Rs 22 lakh and minimum special vending fees of Rs8 lakh. It has been mentioned in the policy this time that one person will be allotted one shop only.

This time, the shops will be given by lottery for a year, earlier there was a combined excise policy for financial year 2017-18 and 2018-19. The new excise policy was recently declared after a gap of two years.
