The new definition of Bharat Mata Ki Jai coined by Congress chief Rahul Gandhi originates from the book, ‘Discovery of India’ penned by his great-grandfather and first prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru. The slogan desiring the ‘Jai’ or victory of Bharat Mata was popularised during the struggle for freedom. Nehru, in the book, recalls that he used to ask his audience the “meaning of the expression Bharat Mata”, and proceeds to decode the slogan. He, in the book, wrote “...what counted ultimately were the people of India, people like them and me who were spread all over this vast land. Bharat Mata — Mother India was essential for these millions of people, and victory to her meant victory to these people.”

The notes of Nehru in his famous books redefining the meaning of the slogan helped Gandhi scion to take on Modi who chanted the slogan in each rally he addresses. In Alwar’s rally, he used Nehru’s quotes in letter and spirit.

Rahul said that Modi chanted Bharat Mata Ki, but the “Bharat Mata is these farmers, youths, mothers and labourers who contributed for the country. The PM Modi works for Anil Ambani and hence he should shout Nirav Modi Ki Jai, Mehul Choksi Ki Jai”.

The discovery of the meaning of Bharat Mata Ki Jai slogan by Rahul, however, did affect Modi a bit. An hour post to Rahul’s explanation on the slogan, Modi in a Sikar rally responded to him, showing that he would continue chanting the slogans in the manner he used to.
