The first day of the budget session in the Rajasthan Assembly witnessed a heated arument between members of the ruling party and those of the Opposition over loan waiver for farmers and ongoing reservation stir by the Gurjars.

The acerbic exchanges led to adjournment of the House for an hour. Interestingly, BJP and Congress legislators, both, avoided raising the issue of Gurjar reservation and the protest by the community members on the floor of the House. It was a motley group of BSP, CPM and RLTP (Rashtriya Loktankrik Party) legislators who took up the issue.

The budget session of 15th assembly began on Monday with oath-taking ceremony of Congress legislator Safiya Zuber Khan who won the Ramgarh by-election. The ceremony was followed by the question hour, which passed off peacefully.

During zero hour, leader of the Opposition, Gulab Chand Kataria, raised the farmers’ loan waiver issue, arguing the Congress government deceived farmers of the state by luring them by flase claims of waiving-off loans within 10 days after the party’s coming to power.

“How many farmers benefited from the decision and how much loan in rupees was waived off by the government in last 54 days, this should explained. The BJP government waived off loan up to Rs 50,000 for each farmer. The government should tell how much of them benefited. You (the government) are just deceiving the farmers,” said Kataria.

To this, parliamentary affairs minister Shanti Dhariwal said the BJP did not specify the number of farmers in state and its burden on the government, while announcing farm loan waiver of up to Rs 50,000.

Kataria retaliated to Dhariwal’s comment claiming the previous BJP government waived off loan for 29 lakh farmers. The BJP legislators also trooped into the well and shouted slogans against Congress government.

When BJP legislators were sloganeering, legislators of the BSP, RLTP and the CPIM also stormed into the well. They demanded that the government recommend the Centre to provide the gurjar community 5 per cent reservation in government jobs and educational institutes.

Neither BJP, Nor Congress, But Others

Interestingly, BJP and Congress legislators, both, avoided raising the issue of Gurjar reservation and the protest by the community members on the floor of the House. It was a motley group of BSP, CPM and RLTP (Rashtriya Loktankrik Party) legislators who took up the issue. The two mainstream parties debate on loan waiver of farmers.
