Textbooks in Rajasthan could soon have chapters on the five CRPF personnel from the state who were martyred in the Pulwama attack. Education Minister Govind Singh Dotasra has suggested to the textbook review committee to revise the books to capture their sacrifice.

"We have recommended to the textbook review committee that chapters on the five martyrs of Pulwama attack be included in the textbooks. They will take a decision to implement it," said Dotasra.

"Rajasthan is the land of martyrs. They hail from every district and it would be a good idea for school children to know the tales of valour and bravery of our martyrs. They should know about the soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation," said the minister in the Congress-governed state.

His predecessor Vasudev Devani of the BJP has welcomed the proposal. "It is good to see that the noble tradition we established is being followed. We had added chapters on 200 men and women who lived and died for the country."

The CRPF personnel who were martyred are Rohitash Lamba from Jaipur, Bhagirath Singh from Dhaulpur, Hemraj Meena from Kota, Narayan Gurjar from Rajsamand and Jeetram Gurjar from Bharatpur.

Contents of the textbooks can be changed on the recommendation of a review committee and it is likely that the chapters on these five soldiers will be included in the coming academic session.

Changes in school textbooks had been the cause of much controversy during the previous Vasundhara Raje government. The major one was related to Maharana Pratap and Akbar. The BJP government had removed the part that termed Akbar mahaan (great) and also declared Pratap as the winner of the battle of Haldi Ghati. But there are no plans afoot yet to broach this subject. "Maharana Pratap is revered by every Rajasthani. We have not yet considered any changes related to him and Akbar," informed Dotasra.

Changes related to Maharana Pratap could be a tricky situation for Congress as the Rajput community could get offended. This would not be in the interest of the Congress that had electorally cashed on the community's anger with BJP.

THE BRAVEHEARTS

  • Rohitash Lamba (Jaipur), Bhagirath Singh (Dhaulpur), Hemraj Meena (Kota), Narayan Gurjar (Rajsamand), and Jeetram Gurjar (Bharatpur)

  • If implemented, the move could spur other states to introduce similar chapters on the Pulwama martyrs
