There may be different threats during pregnancy, depending on the various types of heart diseases, which can endanger both the pregnant woman and the foetus. According to experts, women with heart disease should plan pregnancy only after consultation with doctors. “If a woman has any heart disease and is undergoing treatment then she should make a plan regarding pregnancy only after getting advice from the cardiologist,” Dr Ruchi Gupta, interventional cardiologist said.

“They have to take long-term medicines for the treatment of heart disease and in such condition, if a woman gets pregnant, then that medicine can also have an effect on the fetus,” she said.

Hypertension, one of the most common disease, can be dangerous in case of pregnancy at an older age. “This condition is detected in the 7th month of pregnancy. In such case, it becomes almost impossible to save the child. Similarly, the woman with congenital heart disease, has higher risks of heart failure during pregnancy. Woman who are detected with Valvular Heart Disease during childhood should get checked it once before pregnancy,” said Dr Ruchi

As per specialists, if a woman has Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension then it is not advised to plan a baby as in such case the chances to save the mother is only 1 in 100 case and the child’s chances of survival are zero.

“If a woman is already aware of her illness, then she should plan for her pregnancy by consulting specialist. Delivery of a woman with valvular heart disease should be done at hospital because with gynecologist, cardiology expert is also required, to constantly monitor condition of mother’s heart,” said Dr Ruchi.
