While the monsoonal showers have been too few and far between during the ongoing monsoon season, it has hit the water supply of Jaipur. The supply time has already been decreased in the city as the water level in Bisalpur is not adequate to continue supply. In such dire straits, it is being thought that the additional water can be lifted from the Chambal river to supply in Jaipur and other cities when the water in Bisalpur becomes less.

However, environmentalist claim that it would be a bad move to rely heavily on a river that is rain-fed and which in the current monsoon has not received a good amount of water.

Water in Bisalpur has not reached the level that could sustain Jaipur’s need till monsoons next year and as a result, the dam runs a danger of “running dry”. In the past, there have been instances when water has been lifted from Chambal river for various cities including Ajmer and Bhilwara and now it is being thought that Jaipur might also get the same benefit.

“It would not be a prudent move to lift water from Chambal. First of all, there hasn’t been much rainfall this year that could charge the aquifers under the river. Secondly, water is already lifted from Chambal for Bharatpur, Kota and other areas from Chambal. Taking out more water from the river would mean denting the ecology of the river and the environment” said Tejvir Singh of Tanuj Memorial Trust.

“The need of the hour is a long-term plan to address this situation. As time progresses, water is only going to become scarce. We need to start planning now for the next fifty or hundred years and see if we can overturn the effect of global warming or recharge the groundwater somehow. If this is not done, there might be fights between communities in the years to come over water,” said Rajpal Singh, former member, the state board for wildlife.
