City of Adelaide in South Australia and Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate and share learning pertaining to smart city development.

Jaipur, that is included in the list of smart cities by the government of India, is expected to gain from the smart parking and street lighting structures and designs of the Australian city.

Adelaide is among the foremost cities of the world to implement information technology based solution for civic and health issues, and along with Jaipur it is included in the list of CISCO smart lighthouse cities.

Authorities from both the cities have been in discussion over collaboration for nearly a year, however, a formal understanding was inked on Monday, the first day of Adelaide visit of a three member team of Jaipur Development Authority led by Jaipur development commissioner Vaibhav Galariya.

Councillor of Adelaide, Natasha Malani expressed her excitement over the MoU and said, “This is the next step in building a prosperous relationship between the two cities that will deliver real benefits for our respective communities.”

At Jaipur, the development officials are also looking forward to the partnership. “Despite being on priority, the parking and street lighting component of Smart City projects have not achieved expected progress in Jaipur,” said a JDA officer. “We expect to learn from the experiences of Adelaide in this direction,” he added.

On a five-day foreign tour, the Jaipur Development Authority representative group will be visiting smart cities of Adelaide and Singapore as the teams have two days programmes scheduled at each of these cities. Their visit also aims to strengthen ties between the state governments of Rajasthan and South Australia, as sister states.

Scope for Start-up

The understanding between Adelaide and Jaipur also proposes opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs and start-up ventures. Adelaide has developed IT solutions for functions ranging from waste management to traffic management. An adaptation of this in Jaipur will require such IT solutions to be developed in accordance to local requirement and will also have scope to invite collaboration with start-up projects.
