Diabetic people no longer need to bear the pain of inserting injection for insulin intake. Instead, they only have to inhale the insulin, take a tablet to maintain blood sugar level or carry an insulin pump on the waist as an alternative of multiple daily injections of insulin by syringes or an insulin pen.

Such an alternative and new techniques were discussed and shared in the international conference on diabetes organized by Rajasthan Chapter of Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) here in Jaipur. In the two-day conference, diabetes experts from India and abroad gathered for discussing the latest treatment of sugar disease.

“Now, blood sugar testing and control on sugar level is possible without a needle prick. You can know about your sugar level and need of insulin by a mobile phone,” Dr Jeffrey Mechanic from the United States of America said. “It is possible, just like in case of asthma, to take insulin by inhaler. By sticking an insulin patch in the skin, the need of insulin can be fulfilled while an insulin pump can be easily carried on a belt or inside a pocket which delivers rapid-acting insulin continuously 24 hours a day as per need,” he added.

According to National Family Health Survey-4, in Rajasthan, 8.1 percent men and 4.7 percent women were found diabetic. “India is diabetic capital of the world and diabetes is the fastest growing disease as 7.2 crore cases recorded in 2017 and the figure is expected to nearly double by 2025,” organising secretary and renowned diabetes specialist Dr Sailesh Lodha said. “During more than 40 sessions in the conference, 30 research papers were presented. Three workshops and three debates were also organised in which the dangers of diabetes with the new techniques for its treatment were discussed,” he added.

Dr Ramesh Khardori from the USA informed that the number of researches are being carried out on the prevention of diabetes. Among these, genes responsible for diabetes can be removed from gene therapy. For Type-1 diabetes, experts are doing research on vaccination and stem cell therapy.
