On the nationwide call by Samta Manch for Bandh against amendments in SC/ST Act, markets in Kota, Bundi, Jhalawar and Baran districts of Hadouti region remained closed from 10 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon, on Thursday.

Barring a few incidents of ruckus, no untoward incident was reported from across the region. In some districts, emergency services like petrol pumps and medical shops also remained closed.

At most of the places in Hadauti region, people kept their shops, business establishments shut in protest against the amendments in SC/ST Act.

The shops in the markets were not opened since morning and those that were opened were shut down by groups of Bandh supporters associated with Samta Manch who moved around in the city. The members were seen asking the local traders and businesses to shut their establishments peacefully.

Earlier, Bandh supporters from Samta Manch assembled at a place and took out a rally through  the main markets of Kota, Bundi, Jhalawar and Baran districts. They, subsequently, reached the office of the district collector where they submitted memorandums and formally lodged protest against the amendments made in the SC/ST Act.

“Bandh has remained largely peaceful across Kota city. People kept their shops and business establishments closed on their own,” said additional superintend of police (ASP), Kota city, Umesh Ojha. Emergency services were exempted from the Bandh, he said.

Markets in Baran district remained shut and emergency services also suffered as pharmaceutical and associations and petrol dealers had announced their support to the Bandh, said SP Baran Sunil Kumar Vishnoi.

Petrol pumps in Kota and Bundi districts also remained closed for two hours from 10 am to 12 pm.

“It was a token gesture from our side that we support the bandh against the amendments in the SC/ST Act,” a petrol pump dealer told DNA.
