“Shoulder is a ball and socket joint which has got excellent mobility with relative stability. It has a covering called capsule which has enough space for the ball to move around in the socket,” Dr Arun Singh, Consultant Shoulder and Arthroscopy specialist, Narayana Hospital said. As per doctors, common problems of shoulder include dislocations, tendinitis, bursitis, torn rotator cuffs, frozen shoulder and Periarthritis.

Shoulders are the most fluid joints in human body. They can, therefore, also be unstable because the ball of the upper arm is larger than the shoulder socket that holds it. “Because a shoulder can be unstable, it can be easily injured,” he added.

According to doctors, common problems afflicting the shoulder include dislocations, tendinitis, bursitis, torn rotator cuffs, frozen shoulder and Periarthritis. In Periarthritis, common in the diabetics, covering of joint contracts or shrinks limiting the movements of the shoulder. Rotator Cuff Tear is another common problem mostly in middle-aged population. Rotator cuff comprises of a group of muscles. With age these muscles undergo degeneration and overhead activities can lead to these tears. Patients complain of pain, they are unable to lift the arm above shoulder level.

During shoulder arthroscopy, a surgeon inserts a small camera (arthroscope) into the shoulder joint. As the surgical instruments are thin, it involves very small incisions guided by the camera, resulting in less pain. It also brings down the recovery time of patients.
