Developing an aneurysm, just like a weak and thin spot in a balloon when it is stretched, in the wall of the brain’s blood arteries is a critical medical situation, things could be rare, extremely complex and more life-threatening if three aneurysm develop at once.

Doctors at a city-based hospital gave a new lease of life to a person who was facing such a rare condition, by performing a very complicated surgery. As per doctors, this was possibly the very first reported case of such complication.

Hanuman, a 62-year-old from Jaipur was brought to the hospital emergency after he got unconscious followed by a severe headache. “A CT scan of his brain revealed that there was profuse bleeding in his brain,” Dr Prashant Singh, a neurologist at Narayana Hospital said. “It was found by brain angiography that blood vessels in his brain got worn out at three places from the constant flow of blood and bulged out like a bubble, which we call aneurysm in medical term,” he added.

Globally, only 10 per cent cases from total brain aneurysm are found of more than one aneurysm and out of those, only 2 per cent cases are of three aneurysm.

“There were three aneurysm in the patient’s brain, the first was on the right side of the arteries, the second was in the middle of the brain and the third was located in the front artery of the brain,” Dr Krishnhari Sharma, senior neurosurgeon at Narayana Hospital said. “Doing surgery to treat all of the three in a go was very challenging. By using Micro-vascular and Endoscope technique, by opening the brain from the right, with the same incision and path, all the three aneurysm were operated by clipping them,” he added.

Dr Sharma told that the surgical procedure was very risky and challenging because blood supply in two out of three aneurysm was from the right side while for the third aneurysm (which was located in the middle of the brain), the blood supply was from the left side.

“In this case, if any aneurysm bursts during operation, then it can cause patient’s death on the operation table. There was also a risk that the patients could be completely paralyzed. The surgery procedure lasted for 5 hours. Now, the patient is completely fit and coming for regular follow up,” said Dr Sharma.
