Banswara, the southern district of Rajasthan was the fulcrum of politics as Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar reached there on Wednesday to address a public rally.
Incidentally Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje is also there as part of her public outreach programme.
Nitish’s trip is being seen as the first step towards reviving the Samajwadi support base in the state.
Addressing a public rally at Kushalbagh ground in Banswara the national president of Janta Dal United, Nitish Kumar, in his characteristic style launched a veiled attack on the central and state governments and claimed to offer an alternative.
“Development is essential. But social justice is essential along with development. Development has to be all inclusive and include all sections of the society,” he said while addressing the crowd. He also elaborated on the schemes of Bihar government.
While talking about his favourite subject of alcohol prohibition, Nitish said, “We implemented prohibition in Bihar and it has been successful and given positive results. It should be implemented in all states.”
Nitish garlanded a picture of local stalwart Samajwadi leader Mama Baleshwar Dayal on stage. Dayal is known for his reformist movement among the tribal especially in the field of prohibition, against multiple marriages and for tribal rights.
His area of influence spreads from Banswara in Rajasthan to Jhabua and Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh. He was Rajya Sabha MP from JDU in 1978.
Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, the two neighbouring states that go to polls by the end of this year have large areas where there has been influence of Samajwadi movement. Nitish’s Wednesday rally is believed to be a part of his efforts for establishing pan-India acceptability.
