ARYAMAN BIRLA

If in the highly competitive cricketing world, rags to riches stories speak volumes about the struggle and the grit, the tale of a richie rich narrates the relentless hard work to establish an independent identity while carrying the responsibility of having a heavyweight surname. The Rajasthan Royals recruit, Aryaman Birla is of the latter pedigree who is chasing the dream of playing for Team India. “I have never seen it as coming out of the shadows of my parents’ name. The name is a great responsibility, something that I am extremely proud of. My mind set is, go out and give your best,” said the budding star Aryaman, who is the son of business magnet Kumar Mangalam Birla.

When he talks about being the best, he is earnest about it and his stunning stats in Under-23 carnival CK Nayudu Trophy 2017-18 are there to do all the talking. In the tournament, he emerged as the highest run-getter with 795 under his belt and scored most number of centuries too. This is not it, he even was handy with his left-arm bowling and took 10 wickets. This performance of his played a massive role in Madhya Pradesh’s ascendance, the state he adopted leaving his hometown Mumbai as making a cut here was taking longer. With being a part of Royals camp now, Aryaman by default will now play in Rajasthan, the state where his family has roots in Pilani. “This is something I haven’t really thought of. I am just happy and excited to be a part of the Royals team and looking forward to make most of the opportunity. Also, I haven’t played professional cricket at the SMS Stadium, so this is also going to be a new experience,” said the left-hand bat.

The Under-23 star is self-driven and does not need any prodding from parents to stay focused. “Giving your best in every situation is the mantra I stringently follow,” he said, adding that it must come from within. Apart from training at the camps organised by Rajasthan Royals, Aryaman is putting in his best on the personal front like he does during any other tournament.

The happy go lucky, Mahipal Lomror, never thought that he will be a part of Royals, but now as the opportunity has landed on his doorstep he feels it’s time to raise the ante. Already a batsman of intuition, power and confidence, his maturity came to the fore when more than once he rose to the challenge during recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy to rescue Team Rajasthan from a precarious situation.

Mahi, as he is fondly called by his teammates, is keeping his IPL preparation simple. “I am following my usual routine that includes both fitness training and net practice,” he said, adding that recently his interaction with batting consultant Amol Mazumdar during the first camp held by Rajasthan Royals has really helped him in getting more insight into his game. “Earlier I had heard that he is a batting legend of domestic cricket, but met him during the camp for the first time and it was a great learning. Now I feel more confident and I am trying to incorporate in my batting every advice he gave to me,” said the southpaw.

MAHIPAL LOMROR

Mahipal feels that his left-arm bowling is the X-factor that can help team get timely breakthroughs. “Even when I played the Under-19 World Cup 2016, it was the overall package of batting and bowling that helped me made the cut into the team. And in T20s there’s huge importance of an all-rounders.” In the Ranji Trophy 2017-18 season, he topped the table with 13 wickets for Rajasthan.

His father has been instrumental in making him a cricketer. He recalls when he was just 7 years old, he came to know that in a nearby ground cricket camp was going to be organised and as he was a cricket lover he seized on to the opportunity and was constantly backed by his father. “As my mother has little idea about the sport, she is the one who still worries about I having a job. Even today she says that it’s good that we get to see you on television, but when are you going to have a stable job?” he said.
